In 1971, when J&R was established in downtown New York City, Park Row was a very different place. In the last thirty years, stores have come and gone, Pace University has expanded, and some of the grand old buildings have been renovated. Products have come and gone, too... first came LPs, 8-tracks and quadraphonic hi-fi equipment, and then cassettes. In the eighties, VCRs and video cameras appeared (including Beta). About a decade ago, while reel-to-reel was disappearing, computers became a part of modern life, and J&R Computer World blossomed on Park Row. Then came the arrival of fax machines, cordless phones, the Walkman, CDs, and all the other innovations that are now a part of our life. And now in the 21st Century, J&R offers DVD, MP3 players, cell phones, HDTVs, PDAs, digital cameras, and tens of thousands of other products. And through all these changes, J&R's amazingly intense customer loyalty is as constant as ever. All this time, J&R has steadily opened separate stores on this block, each with its own identity, and now Park Row is J&R Row! |
